New Green Group on Brent Council: We are proud to be part of the Green Party's vision of hope and providing a real alternative to the status quo

Left-Right: Tony, iman, Erica, Mary and Harbi

A statement from the newly formed Green Group of Councillors in Brent Council: Cllr Tony Ethapemi, Cllr Erica Gbajumo, Cllr Harbi Farah, Cllr Iman Ahmadi Moghaddam, Cllr Mary Mitchell. 15.12.25

Like thousands of others, we joined the Labour Party because we believed in building a fairer society. As councillors, we took that mission into Brent, determined to stand up for the people who placed their trust in us.

Between us we have over 80 years membership of the Labour Party and over 30 years experience as local councillors representing our communities and advocating for residents. We have now come to the realisation that we can no longer play that role effectively while remaining within the Labour Party.

We always knew being a party of government would put the principles and values of the party to the test, but we have watched as on every issue this government goes further away from the founding Labour Party principles of democracy, social justice and equality.

We have a huge amount of respect for many of our hard working Labour colleagues and party members in Brent, but we don’t feel that the party represents the values we hold any longer.

We want to represent a party that believes in radical overhaul of our systems to tackle the cost of living crisis and rising inequality, including wholesale reform of our tax system to ensure that the richest pay their way, rather than tinkering around the edges.

We want to represent a party that recognises that there is a not just a conflict, or even a humanitarian emergency, but a genocide taking place in Gaza, one with British roots and one that we are supporting through arms sales and criminalising peaceful protest.

We want to represent a party that recognises that people and planet are inextricably linked and that we need to do much more to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises. That this is not something that will only affect our children, but is a case of national security here and now.

We want to be members of a party that has a real and open conversation about national identity & community cohesion and that doesn’t scapegoat immigrants, a party that maintains its international obligations to asylum seekers and stands firm against racism.

We want to be members of a party nationally and locally that values diversity of opinion rather than a top-down structure with no space for difference, that silences and expels members who speak out against the party line. We want to shape politics differently in Brent.

We did not enter public life to serve a party machine - we entered it to serve our residents and we will not abandon that duty. That is why we are today resigning our membership of the Labour Party, and joining the Green Party, becoming the first Green Group of Councillors in Brent.

We are proud to be part of the Green Party’s vision of hope and to be providing Brent residents with a real alternative to the status quo. Because there is an alternative. An alternative to austerity. An alternative to a politics that tells you “there’s not enough money” whilst billions keep flowing into the pockets of the wealthy and we continue to chase economic growth at all costs.

Today marks a new chapter in local politics in Brent, rooted in accountability and a commitment to environmental and social justice.

We invite all who share this vision to work with us in offering Brent a real alternative. Together, we can build a Brent that puts people before profit, public good before private greed and hope before fear.

  2. Now have the courage to resign and put these newly-found convictions to the test in by-elections.

    2. 6 months before an election there will be no by-election. They will put their convictions to the test in just five months.

  4. Well done to Brent Greens, after all the years, banging a drum, 🥁 they’ve a real opportunity here to shift the scene in the borough.

My only reservation is that we’ve seen Labour councillors do absolutely nothing year on year. Perhaps that was due to the ‘strong leader’ and cabinet model. But i hope they return this faith the green membership has shown in them, and take the opportunity to stand up and show what they can do up to the elections. Show themselves to be more than the losers who weren’t selected and present themselves as some movers and shakers. One things for sure, they won’t be short of ideas of what to do differently as Greens are clear on that. Further, there is no better resource for them than the green stalwart and editor of this blog Martin Francis. Happy sailing.

    1. The Greens allow Councillors to represent their residents first and foremost, and above the Party Leadership

  6. Good on them! I really really hope Brent Labour loses seats and votes at the next local elections.. Congratulations to these new Green Councillors for taking a principled stand!

  7. Weren't these 5 all deselcted by Labour as candidates for the May 2026 local elections?

As Labour Councillors did they ever stand up to the Labour Council Leader?

As Labour Councillors did they vote against things like huge planning applications badly impacting the residents they claim to have represented?

Will the defect back to Labour if they get elected?

  8. All except mary were deselected as councillors by labour, just bitter wanting to stay as councillors, should have worked harder when they were.

    1. Its a big step to join another party, and that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘bitterness’. It could be out of passion and desire to do politics differently, and really serve their local communities. Zack Polanski warned Labour, Greens want to tale over. The rest are on notice.

  9. Thanks Scott. One of the key points we made during the defector interviews was the level of case work expected by the Green Party and the centrality of accountability to the ward constituents as well as the local party.

  10. Won't stop them defecting back to Labour especially if promised a higher paid cabinet role.

  11. "We did not enter public life to serve a party machine"???

Well they apparently did so happily for a "combined 30 years" until deselection as LABOUR candidates persuaded most of them to jump ship - hanging on long enough after deselection so that any by elections were not possible under the 6 months rule and to continue to collect their special responsibility allowances by two of them be keeping their Labour Group positions.

Please do not take Brent people for fools. This is all about self preservation and very little about principled decision to better serve the public.

The only good thing is the sight of disintegration of the Labour Group in Brent who are unfit to govern and should finally be kicked out of office.

  12. Will Brent Labour be brave enough to explain why they thought everyone here was good enough to stand, be elected and represent both Labour and a large number of Brent Constituents but NOW they are deselected as they are not fit and proper? This reeks of top down anti-democratic authoritarian control from the Labour Party central office.. special congratulations to Mary Mitchell for changing party..

  13. This excites me. I left Labour myself a few months ago, and I'm enjoying being outside of a party for now... but this is clearly something to keep an eye on for me.

  14. Open the door and windows, that’s the winds of change coming through Brent.
Labour might find it a bit chilly, but once they’re all send back to their homes, they can keep warm. Maybe there is a place in the house of lords waiting for them.

  15. I've read the comments people have made about these candidates having been deselected (bar Mary) and thus 'bitter' BUT have you considered that they may not have been selected by the party because they challenged the Leadership and weren't prepared to be puppets.

  16. Mo Butt is an amoral tyrant who has removed every shred of democracy on the council and replaced it with top-town grace and favour. Every single Labour Councillor knows that the Council leadership is rotten and has only maintained power through manipulating constitutions and removing voting rights.

Only question is what do the other Labour Councillor’s stand for and when will they also have a reckoning with their own conscience?

    1. The remaining councillors obviously remain as the are either family or are gaining from their support of the Leader and Towerblock Tatler
