Readers may be surprised to see Cllrs Butt and Pavey on a flyer about fighting austerity when they have been giving into it and implementing cuts, but I am assured by an organiser that this meeting is not about giving Butt and Pavey a 'free pass' but '..about a critical dialogue with them, taking the Corbyn letter at its word when it asked them to work with community groups and unions to build up a campaign against Tory austerity and its impact locally.'
We shall see.
We shall see.
How can poor B&P be expected to help 'build a campaign against Tory cuts and their impact locally' when all their energies up to this point have been devoted to fighting such campaigns? It's completely unrealistic and unfair and goes against their basic beliefs and principles. It forces them into a very difficult moral dilemma. It's like asking a fundamentalist Christian cakemaker to produce a cake with gay-supporting slogans on it.
ReplyDeleteB&P should be left to concentrate on doing what they're good at: facilitating Tory cuts and facing down local troublemakers who try to resist them. Indeed, as either B or P might have said if they'd wandered by mistake into a classic tv sitcom:
'I didn't get where I am today by fighting austerity for a better borough!'

There's pretty clear red water between Pavey and Butt.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably because Pavey actually has political views (even if they're not your taste).
Mo Butt doesn't believe in anything except Mo Butt.
