BRENT CYCLING  CAMPAIGN ELECTION HUSTINGS

 Wednesday April 20th 7pm-9pm

St Catherine’s Church, Neasden Lane, London, NW10 1QB

The May local election will be like no other. The next four years will determine what happens to Brent for the foreseeable future in terms of resilience as we face the biggest challenge of our time.

Transport is a major contributor to pollution and enabling people to transition to sustainable travel will be pivotal to decarbonisation and reducing harmful emissions. Here's your chance to ask how they will deliver the change we need?

Should the health situation change, we will hold this event online.

Candidates:

  • The Green Party: Nathan Williams (Kilburn)
  • The Liberal Democrats: Councillor Anton Georgiou (Alperton)
  • The Labour Party: Councillor Neil Nerva (Queens Park)
  • The Conservatives: TBC

The Hustings will be chaired by Sarah Green, a local resident and human rights campaigner (formerly End Violence Against Women Coalition and Amnesty International), and a Brent school Governor.

We are collating questions in advance and there will be a chance to ask directly at the event, feel free to email yours if you wish at: brent@lcc.org.uk.

Question

Post UK lockdown phase of ongoing Covid pandemic (a 28 million lockdown of Shanghai for example) vehicle congestion has become worse than ever in West London and cycling is an excellent alternative way to get about quickly between locals with cycle parking rapid and easy too.

Both new Kings Cross and new Battersea Power Station with excellent public transport are interesting for being market dependency housing at density yet car free environments based on people walking and cycling about safer. Both of these re development sites are even slightly larger size than Kilburn Growth Area 48 hectares re development site which likewise has excellent public transport, car free new housing plan required and the lowest car ownership levels of anywhere in Brent.

What is the doubling of vehicle adopted roads and opening up of more vehicle roads in this South Kilburn 48 hectares re development Brent Local Plan all about- is it to sell underground car parking spaces to surrounding protected population de-growth many cars neighbourhood residents? Decades of South Kilburn sanctions (since 1979), extensive infrastructure, environmental, flood defences destructions unchecked- the word colony springs to mind and colonies don't have from day one planned cycle networks or active travel routes the way new Kings Cross and Battersea do.

SKGA lack of cycle integrated network and green active routeways severs many South East Brent residents from Central London access using healthier, safer and cheaper travel alternatives.
