UPDATE: Drivers ignoring Wembley High Road ban WILL be fined, Brent Council confirms. Fine £130 or £65 if paid within 14 days.

Following rumours that the cameras on the closed section of Wembley High Road are not being used to catch drivers ignoring the 'Buses and Emergency Vehicles Only' restriction, a reliable source at Brent Council has said that the cameras are working and are catching unauthorised vehicles. The motorists will all receive a fine.

UPDATE:

Councillor Krupa Sheth, Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, said:

People using the emergency/bus lane without authorisation will receive a fine of £130 or £65 if paid within 14 days. We've communicated the closure widely, officers have been on site to speak with motorists, and we've also increased signage around the area to make the situation crystal clear.

  1. I hope that (all) drivers will take heed of the warning
but sadly as most adults know, that's unlikely to happen.

    1. They won't and will think that they don't need to pay the fine either.

  2. As a resident in the Barn Hill Ward I took a walk down there earlier on today by the Triangle & it was plain to see that car after car after car (once navigating the temporary lights) just casually drove through the single lane. Pathetic to see because it's plainly obvious that you'll get fined by all the signage currently there & information given in the area beforehand. I have no love for the Council, the opposite in fact however in this instance I hope they do enforce all these fines for the morons (not all morons in fairness) who are plainly ignoring the warnings by driving through there.

  3. Should drivers be going down here - no
Could Brent have done more to provide better routes rather than a diversion that takes you on a tour of the London borough of brent - yes
Does brent council think we live in an era without smartphones that route you around town instead of diversion signs? - maybe

Someone really ought to create a petition for better traffic management in this borough, I am sure it would get hundreds of signatures.

    1. Why don't you create the petition? Easy to do on Brent Council website.

    2. So you don’t want Brent to collect money from well advertised cameras when you know the council’s always in need of funds and frankly this is stupidity of drivers who think they can get away with it?

    3. No - NO ONE has mentioned that anyone should “get away” with it. In fact we see some people being very honest in the comments on this post. What the comments DO suggest is perhaps more could be done to alleviate the disruption being caused to motorists - which in this case includes buses as they use the same carriageway. Have you seen the amount of people waiting at the bus stops? Do you understand the impact this disruption will have on their lives? - In a time where people are already so stretched for their money. They are probably having to fork out money for Ubers and getting home substantially late.

    5. We need better planning by a local authority that cares about local residents!

Why are they doing the works in Wembley High Road now??? Why not do them in the summer when the weather is warmer and the days are longer and the schools are closed for 6 weeks???? People would be more inclined to walk and there would be less traffic on the roads for at least some of the 18 week timescale.

It's freezing cold now and with dark mornings and evenings people are understandably reluctant to leave their cars at home.

Yes there are concerts at the stadium in the summer but the buses are always diverted away from the Triangle on concert days and Wembley Stadium is supposed to be a public transport destination!

    6. First things first some residents appear to have noticed rat runs on Cecil Ave - to counter this large signs should have been used on High Road near Park Lane similar to the green ones used on Event Days, this would ensure cars turn left in good time rather than proceeding forward.

Next they could have used their social media and website to clearly inform residents of any “emergency” work being undertaken by utilities. This is the BARE minimum that could be done. All other councils have information on their website itself. Look at Harrow Council, they inform residents whenever there are disruptive road works on X.

Next they could have looked into how the traffic was managed at the Park Lane junction due to the amount of cars now turning left into it, and whether traffic management with an operator present 24/7 here along with any bus priority measures (with help with TfL) on Park Lane would alleviate any disruption.

Finally, as these are being advertised as “upgrades” and not usual maintenance works, residents could have been consulted using haveyoursay (the Brent Council website used for consultations). Perhaps if no one objected to overnight work, work could have been done 24/7 and much quicker than the 5 months of disruption (nearly half a year!).

I’m not from this area but I do pass it a lot, it looked like the businesses in the area very pretty quiet and impacted by these works.

Where there is a will there is a way.

  4. Unfortunately the disgruntled drivers deterred by the new digital sign are now creating a rat run turning into Cecil Avenue with no regard for pedestrians crossing. Very dangerous for children on their way to school this morning.

  5. There needs to be better signage and speeding enforcement - our road has been like a race track all day!

  6. Common sense never fails to amaze me with some people. Just read the signs, a petition is not going to do anything. The roads are closed for a reason.

  7. We need speeding enforcement on our backstreets before someone is seriously injured!

  8. I was one of the morons getting through there 3 times. One time Wednesday evening and twice on Thursday.

While I'm taking responsability for being a sheep and following the traffic and the GPS, thinking that is some glitch in the matrix and not trusting my knowledge, I feel like this is a total fail.

Being constantly late at work with a journey of 30 minutes easily becoming 1.5h with unpredictable traffic and works everywhere.

I'm not trying to find excuses but all this is so frustrating and obviously I'll take accountability and pay the fines, and take that 1.5h Journey instead.

They should try however take some measures and also think from a our perspective. Having enforcers there could be a step forward.

    1. I too got caught on Wednesday, like sheep I followed however I don’t think there was enough signs at the time. ( they have probably put more signs up since). I was stuck at the back of the queue for the lights. And only when at prime time traffic hour, I drove through and saw the signs which were too late and no possibility of stopping or turning around as it was a single lane! With cars right behind me rushing through the green light at rush hour! I’m absolutely livid as I followed my gps and no warning of this no entry/camera route.. if Brent kne we they had planned this route why have they bog notified the gps, hoohlemsps/Waze etc! Why even create a lane if it’s a no through road! If the road is closed, there should be no exception other than emergencies! Brent certainly did not have enough clear signs for the first 3 days of closures! Absolute livid!

    2. Surely the enforcers are the cameras..

  9. When there are road works in Wembey High Roand and also road works in Ealing Road and also Beresford Avenue is closed for roadworks too where do they expect vehicles to go???

Why are all these major routes having road works at the same time???

Who at Brent Council is responsible for managing all of this??? Why aren't they scheduled better and publicised better???

Drivers should stick together and refuse to pay the fines as the situation is ridiculous!

How much impact will all of these roadworks have on the local economy???

    1. Educate yourself via one.network, they’re all emergency works

    2. You’re such a serial complainer omg

    3. Even if they are they could all be better managed and publicised - nothing on local radio stations re Wembley High Road being closed for 18 weeks!

      Delete
    4. I wouldn’t even know what the local radio stations are. People would’ve seen the signs and could’ve done their own homework in this digital age.

  10. Warning signs telling of Major Roadworks in this area were put up before Christmas. The road signs that are in place are clear and concise, the signs stating no Entry except Buses, Cameras in operation are huge, and there is plenty of room to turn around. No excuses can be made for non compliance, unless you blind, cannot read, or just stupid to think the rules don't apply to you. Yes it's inconveniencing a lot of people but it is works that has to be done. I know perhaps we could draft in the army to build a bridge over the top so everyone would be able to drive along the route as normal!

  11. The yellow signs are not big enough and the digital signs were only saying Wembley High Road closed on 13th January - it didn't say from 13th January for 18 weeks.

There are also now temporary traffic lights and lane closures near Wembley Police Station and a lane closed for other roadworks near Talbot Road.

  12. If one part of the triangle is open for buses only in both directions, then one can ask why divert every other vehicle to do a tour of Brent and just have temporary lights in both directions. And since his is manned for 18 weeks, then the signage should have been installed in proper poles where it is visible at a distance, not at the last minute. I'm sure alot of people of argue the PCN. Money will be generated from the camera enforcement, but the company doing the works shuodl have instead been required to mand the road closure and allow only buses through and advise all other motorists to turn around. But that would be too easy I guess and won't earn Brent the millions they will rack up in 18 weeks.

    1. Yep penalise us local residents when cabs picking up Wembley Stadium concert goers are allowed to park up on double yellow lines with engines idling all around that area with no one even moving them on.

      Delete
    2. The only bus going through the high road from Park lane is the 18 all others are diverted
On Park Lane so guess why can’t cars go as being a resident at the triangle area is rather frustrating and
long winded to go all round the north circular and come back and turn right into Oakington Manor drive
The time taken to go the very short run now takes 45 minutes instead of 2/3 minutes!! Highly Annoying

    3. Perhaps the cameras can stay in place and be used for event days only in this way
