Monday is 'Blue Bag Day' at Brent Council as 3,422 signature petition presented

Recent storms have probably not helped the case for the blue bags introduced by Brent Council to improve recycling rates. Some residents report soaked cardboard (which once wet cannot be recycled) and bags blown away in  recent high winds.

On Monday a petition signed by 3,422 residents will be presented to the Cabinet and Cllr Krupa Sheth, lead member for the Environment, will respond.

The petition:

We the undersigned petition the council to cancel the blue bin bags and return to the single blue bin for recycling.

The blue bin bags are made of poor quality. The stitching is already coming apart and the velcro is of such poor quality it does not stick.

The bags cannot be left out in the rain as they will fill with water without the lid being stuck on properly.

In high winds, the bags will fly on to the roads causing hazard for vehicles and pedestrians.

The bags cannot be expected to be stored in peoples homes.

Earlier in the changeover to the new system a petition was launched on the Change website that collected 2,575 signatures,

In Brent the council wants to change the recycling position from paper being collected once a week, from a paper and glass bin, to collecting paper on a fortnightly basis. Furthermore, the paper will only be collected from a bag which is far smaller than the existing bin.

It will not be remotely feasible to keep up with regular deliveries or even receipt of a daily newspaper. Residents will have more paper/cardboard than can be recycled under this new system.

If this is done, it will cause substantial inconvenience for residents due to the infrequent collection. This will encourage dumping as people will be unable to store their paper. This will affect the entirety of the borough.

Brent needs to ensure the collection of paper is once a week and a bin is provided for this purpose.

Brent Council is due to implement a trial of a third bin for paper and cardboard in the Autumn after the first year of the blue bag scheme.

The Cabinet Meeting will be held at 10am on Monday in the Conference Hall. The petition is early on the Agenda. The public can attend in person or on line. LINK

We all know what the Leader will say through his puppet cabinet members don't we? Towerblock will take the opportunity to be a playground bully as always (The recipient won't get a right of reply so she can be a sarcastic as she likes). The cabinet member for Environment will read out (too fast) what her puppet masters have written for her. Some of the other cabinet members will make really nonsensical speeches such as Nerva, Jackson and Knight.

Brent's councillors know what's best for residents so they can ignore what residents think and want and just insult them.

As for voting this bunch of ne'er do wells out of power, the Tories are not an option, the LibDems still haven't been forgiven and the Greens don't stand a chance of getting elected.

We will just have to continue with the nonsense coming from the Leader and his cronies and protected officers. Don't forget what Towerblock says about Officers? Yes, they are always right and don't make mistakes or have bad judgemet. Therefore you are not allowed to insult them by saying they've made mistakes costing millions of pounds and B~ent is near bankruptcy. I won't list out any of these errors million pound errors because they can't be true can they, Towerblock of the school playground said so.

I'm old enough to remember when the dustmen were on strike across the Country in the late 1970's. I was a young boy & my parents along with hundreds of other families took all their overdue rubbish & threw it right outside Brent Council's main entrance (now the French School). Ironically Brent Council soon managed to get it all collected within a day strike or no strike! What residents should do is to bring all their blue bags along to the Council & dump them right outside the main entrance & flatly refuse to use these useless bags anymore! Actions always speak louder than words....or petitions!

Ever heard the story "if it's not broke don't fix it" the system of combined recycling was working perfectly well. I can't see how this way is saving money when it needs an extra truck to collect it, and they still have to sort it when collecting recycling from all the thousands of flats, as they are exempt from the system.

Maybe someone in the council has a vested interest in the company that make/supply these, maybe they are made from excess ppe!!
Complete waste of time and money, employing more street cleaners would be better.

All of the above...
There has been no consideration for people living in small properties where are you supposed to store these bags as they increase in size due to the vast amount of card paper etc you can't store in gardens as they get soaked what was wrong with the bins? What was the expense of making these bins? Was there a bonus for whoever agreed to this? Anyway it's not working please reconsider?

Perhaps Brent Council can explain why Newham Borough residents pay less council tax than us but have both their general and recycling wheelie bins emptied EVERY week, not alternate weeks???

They also have more councillors than we do in Brent.

Newham is a majority Labour run borough same as Brent so how can they balance the books whilst Brent just keep blaming Tory cuts???

Oh yes, the blue bag? Mine's in the street somewhere and my recycling is now in the grey bin. Up yours Bent Council.

Those bags are more of nuisances than anything! Please get rid of each and everyone of them. Useless as can be!

The (so called) bags are more of nuisances than being useful. Whoever came up with the dumb idea should be banned from making any decision within the council. The bags themselves need to be recycled. One of the most stupid ideas EVER!!!

We have a green bin for garden waste,
A grey bin for general waste
A blue bin for recycle
A yellow for medical waste.
Why not a brown or red for cartboard

Which person patted them selves on the back thinking it was a economic revolutionary brilliant idea? When money would of been saved to just use the bins we already have. Alot of tenants or home owners come home from wherever to find these bags sitting in a rain puddle or worse, no one wants it in thier home after that. If Brent consulted us before developing & going ahead with the idea ,many peoples response would of given ideas to why it is a daft and wasteful idea.

You’ll notice grey bins are overflowing now, every collection day.

What do Greens or Libdems say about these bags?
