The recording of Thursday's very unusual Planning Committee appears to have been delayed.
Brent Council website today
This is unusual but the meeting was extremely unusual. Three decisions were made on the Wembley Hospital, Chaplin Road: FOR, AGAINST, DEFER and serious allegations made about intimidation of residents by the applicant for Thanet Lodge.
One the recording is available I will cover fully but meanwhile the story can be told in my Tweets.
Proposed development on Wembley Hospital site
DEMOLITION OF WEMBLEY HOSPITAL AND REPLACEMENT BY HOUSING
Recorded Decision:
RESOLVED to defer the decision for the following reason(s): · As the majority of Members on the Committee had indicated that they were minded to refuse the application, it was agreed to defer a final decision to a future Committee meeting in order to enable a further report to be provided addressing the indicative reasons outlined as the basis for refusal, including: i) insufficient provision of affordable housing; ii) insufficient parking provision on site and impact of congestion on surrounding streets; iii) lack of community space; iv) lack of on-site play space for older children; v) insufficient provision of family sized housing; vi) harm to neighbouring amenity including loss of daylight; and vii) impact on non-designated heritage asset and character to the streetscene.
Voting on the above decision was unanimous and accordingly, the application was deferred to allow for further assessment and consideration of the matters identified by the Committee. |

Amazing, even though B~ent Labour have hung onto the Planning Committee by the skin of their teeth, sensible Councillors have stopped (for the moment) Butt's planning steamroller, at last. Long may it continue.
Well done councillors. Keep going and save your home.
How much constant anxiety we must live with when Brent council behave the way they do, always wondering what the next fight will be. Stay strong everyone who is suffering through this right now, you are not alone. Thank you Wembley Matters for sharing this information.
Don't understand how Cllr Saqib Butt can be Chair of the Brent Council Planning Committee when his brother Cllr Mo Butt is the Brent Council Leader continually pushing for developments all over Brent because of the CIL money Brent Council get from developers?
Surely this is a conflict of interests?

I agree! Isn't it called cronyism?
A huge thank you to the Liberal Democrats councillors for looking after the people of Brent. Anton is so dedicated, hard-working and always willing to help. He should become the new Leader of the council. Someone who truly cares.
Please ask the Conservative Leader as he decided to allow Councillor Butt to remain in power in return for a few financial perks at Council taxpayers expense.

Isn't this nepotism even worse at Brent Council with the Council Leader's Brother installed as the Chair of the Brent Planning Committee with a casting vote over planning applications that the Council Leader supports ...
"Nepotism in promotions was a key theme running through the findings: “Talent identification and promotions decisions in policing are often shaped in the image of the leaders who are responsible for them at a local level.
“This has created fertile ground for nepotism and bias to influence progression and development.”
One officer told the report: “It is very clearly nepotistic. Jobs for the boys or the girls who’re mates with the right people."

What exactly is the point of the Planning Committee and should we not save the £15,000 extra paid to the Leader's brother for chairing the meetings?
At the beginning of the meeting Councillor Butt (jnr) reminds us of the Housing shortage in Brent and that we need more homes.
He and the other 3 Labour Councillors then vote to approve every planning application despite of the fact that they do not meet the Council's own target for affordable homes. The Wembley Hospital site application was discussed for 2 and a half hours - during this time two of the Labour Councillors did not ask a single question or made a single contribution or express a single opinion. What exactly are they there for? And what possible justification is there to pay them an extra allowance of over £2,000 each?

Nodding Donkeys welcome in B~ent Labour
What shocked us at the meeting was the unprofessionalism.
The sound was awful, those speaking or asking questions, including well experienced councillors, had to keep being told to speak up or speak into their microphones.
There was no paperwork for members of the public to refer to and very few slides shown on a screen far away.
Two planning committee councillors asked no questions at all - they were asked why - the female Labour Councillor said ah I'm a new councillor - but if this is correct she should have been asking even more questions. The male Labour Councillor just said, well everyone else is asking questions.
Lib Dem, Green and Conservative Councillors asked lots of important and pertinent questions - Cllr Gallagher was very impressive.
Finally it was one of the speakers against the development who pointed out that the Cllr who'd left the room during the debate was then ineligible to vote - not the Chair, not the Planning Officers and not the Brent Council Legal team - wonder why they all chose to ignore it until it was pointed out to them?
What a mess we are in here in Brent.
A minority party leader becoming leader of the Council? How is that democracy?
