Black History Month event: Learn from the Grunwick strike!

Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at 7:00 PM

August 2026 was 50 years since the start of the Grunwick strike, a major struggle for workplace and trade union rights by predominantly female, migrant, South Asian film processing workers. It was a tumultuous two-year battle that, in the face of employer aggression, media demonisation and brutal police violence, saw widespread solidarity from other workers in the area and far beyond, but grossly inadequate support from the top of the labour movement - and ultimately defeat. What is the story of the Grunwick strike, why is it so important and what are its lessons for the workers' movement and left today?

For Black History Month 2026, the Green Party Trade Union Group and Brent Greens are hosting a meeting with Sundari Anitha, author with Ruth Pearson of Striking Women: Struggles and Strategies of South Asian Women Workers from Grunwick to Gate Gourmet, a book built around interviews with the strikers themselves.
