Brent is NOT ditching the blue bags

There was a flurry of activity and some pretty pithy comments on Next Door earlier today when a resident posted a copy of a letter that seemed to suggest that the blue bag for the collection of cardboard and paper was to be ditched by Brent Council and mixed recycling re-introduced.

Cllr Georgiou checked it out and Brent Council confirmed it just referred to one specific street because of particular practical collection difficulties.

The 3,400 blue bag petition is due to be presented at Brent Cabinet on January 16th 2024.

It’s a stupid scheme. So impractical and difficult for residents. We have no space for it in the kitchen. We keep falling over it in our cramped kitchen. And we produce more recycling than the bag can take, as the bin collectors didn’t take the extra we ended up having to take stuff to the waste recycling centre. Give us a bin we can keep outside, even though it will mean four bins outside. It’s a nightmare!

the blue bags will probably start falling apart in 6 months to a year, whereas this is untrue of dustbins

Could the Cllr Georgiou elaborate, as why this particular street is exempt, because many streets are struggling with practical collection! Storage etc.

more ineptitude on the part of officers, giving out a vague letter. the speed in which this went around, viral to various groups, goes to show just how deeply unpopular this is with residents. roll on the next election, and the bin, the bags, campaign and bin your Councillor, along with it.

I'd be interested to know if there are any cost savings and reduced workload for Veolia with the blue bag and alternative bin collection schemes? Anybody know? If yes, then I would be furious that this whole scheme could be to benefit Veolia rather than residents and the environment. Veolia have contacted to perform activities within a specific budget. Maybe a way for it to cut costs and work. Wouldn't surprise me with Brent.

It took the blue bag collects several minutes to empty two blue bags into a grey bin today. What a pathetic scheme this is. If only councillors had the ga-ads to speak up.

With all the recent wet weather loads of the paper and cardboard in the blue bags or left next to it has got soaked - if it gets wet it cannot be recycled as the fibres are damaged!

Plenty of flying blue bags today as well!

Get rid of the blue bags. They are unsightly, poop quality, inconvenient. Why can we not continue to use our wheelie bins. Water gets into the bags. Waste of my no money. Listen to the people in Brent.
