BREAKING: Brent Labour Party members excluded from candidate selection process for 2026 local elections

Usually over the next few months Labour Party members would be meeting to select the candidates for their ward in the next local council election in 2026.  In the past there have been allegations of candidates signing up friends and family as Labour Party members a few week before the selection meeting in order to get the maximum vote.

This year is different.

Selection will be made by external 'assessors' recruited by the London Region of the Labour Party.  Each candidate will have a 30 minute virtual interview.  Candidates will be able to express a preference for their top three wards but sitting councillors will be given first preferences in the allocation of wards.

So what role will rank and file Labour Party members have?

The control by the London Region does not end there. A 'Campaign Improvement Board'  will operate in Brent due to the electoral challenge it faces. It will oversee the selection process and establish a relationship with all Brent candidates ahead of the election. Candidates wil be expected to sign a contract setting out campaigning expectations and any extra support needed.  Training will also be provided.

The Brent Campaign Improvement Board  will include Abdi Duale (NEC), Bella Sankey (Leader of Brighton & Hove Council), and Clyde Loakes (Deputy Leader of Waltham Forest Council). All are well known supporters of Labour leader Keir Starmer.

Cllr Shama Tatler is Vice Chair of the London Regional Executive Committee and a member o the Regional Board for Barnet, Camden, Brent and Harrow.

What’s the evidence for an electoral challenge in Brent? They come put red rosettes on the mice, and we’d call them Cllr.

Vote Labour out at the local elections in May 2026 - they are ruining our once great borough.

Well reform are going to raise income tax thresholds to £20,000, instantly making wealthier the poorest, and will abolish inheritance tax, instantly scrapping the most hated tax in the country, making everyone wealthier. Unless labour start rewarding workers and families like this, they’re going to struggle

Labour Party members have had a vote on who their Council candidates are in the past. Although there were flaws in the system, at least it had the semblance of democracy. Now Party members will have no say, but still be expected to go door to door to get these annointed candidates elected.

Yes, but it says sitting councillors will be given preference, so friends and family councillors will remain. It's only a PR excersise, a stitch up.
Possibly, Also job recruitment in the council needs to be looked at, here also friends and family possibly get support.

There’s definitely been some councillors signing people up in their own communities to garner favour - hopefully this will weed those people out!

A wonderful book "Stepping on White Corns" by former Labour Councillor Jim Moher provides a great insight how Labour in Brent used to (probably still does) go about selecting its Candidates. Packing meetings has been going on for years and was certainly used by the present Labour Leader Cllr Butt to ensure that his predecessor Cllr Ann John was not re-selected a few years ago. Not surprisingly with this kind of corrupt practices some long standing Labour Members in Brent asked the national and regional Labour Party to intervene and stop the abuse by the Butt family and their associates which has brought the Party into dis-repute. Genuine long standing members of Brent Labour welcome this intervention.

Labour must be running scared 😉

Is that really why? Seems region standard status quo these days so doubtful

The recent by election in Alperton saw a massive collapse in the Labour vote with the Liberal Democrat romping home with a greatly increased majority. With the Labour vote collapsing in Brent as in other parts of the country Labour are already counting on losing all the split and marginal wards and consolidating to win 30 out of the 57 seats in Brent which is just about enough to hand to their control. Reform are not the threat - as despite of a lot of nationally paid effort they only got 8% in Alperton. The threat to Labour in different parts of Brent from the Lib Dems, The Greens and the Conservatives who although struggling have hopes of retaking Barnhill, Preston and Northwick Park plus the one remaining Labour seat in Queensbury. The thing that Labour fears most is of course tactical voting where voters forget their natural loyalties and instead vote for the Party with the best chance of beating Labour in their area.

I think reform have a good chance of winning those old conservative seats like Barnhill, Preston etc. They also have a good chance of unseating barry gardiner

Inheritance Tax i think is where Labour will start losing some votes from our more well off asian populations.

That is if your face fits with the New, New Labour-Blue Party.

In the past Mo Butt said he was a member of Momentum.
Does that mean he will be weeded out by Starmer's Stasi?

Think there are pictures of mo butt with momentum 😂

Labour candidate selection for Alperton was conducted entirely by Region (with no local input). Region placed a heavy premium on the ability to articulate unquestioning support of the local group, and to refrain from recognising anything resembling public discontent with the effects on the ground of local government service delivery.

As for Region's views on race equality (consisting of a total lack of support) - don't get me started..........

Let's please build momentum to get Labour out of Brent!

Anonymous said...

Now whom would you be referring to?

Labour were never going you win that seat in Alperton!

Previous Lib Dem Cllr Anton Georgiou worked so hard to make a real difference and residents recognised that Lib Dem candidate Charlie Clinton, who lives in Alperton, would carry on the good work 👏

Local politics should not be about national issues - vote for local candidates who will make a difference to where you live.

The huge Labour majority in Brent has lead to our borough being ruined - it is better to have a varied selection of councillors from all parties running our borough.

Tatler's revenge on fellow councillors

If they hadnt been fiddling the vote to get their buddies elected in the wards this wouldnt be necessary

Yes - make a start by convincing 20 friends or neighbours to vote for anyone other than Labour in the local elections in May 2026, and ask each of them to do the same etc etc etc. by choosing the candidates best deserving to beat Labour in their area. Word of mouth is often the best way to get the result you are after. If everyone keen to get Labour out does this not even Muhammad Butt will be able to stop the avalanche.

Ms #parachute's working hard to get rid of those who aren't like her. It would be easer for all of us if Ms #parachute just finally joined the Tories and be done with it. It's definitely where she belongs.

And taking away winter fuel allowance 😞

Yes! Tell 5 people a week not to vote Labour. We just need a viable alternative, and no, that is not you Lib Dem’s, as you’re fascists too.
