Left-Right: Tony, iman, Erica, Mary and Harbi
A statement from the newly formed Green Group of Councillors in Brent Council: Cllr Tony Ethapemi, Cllr Erica Gbajumo, Cllr Harbi Farah, Cllr Iman Ahmadi Moghaddam, Cllr Mary Mitchell. 15.12.25
Like thousands of others, we joined the Labour Party because we believed in building a fairer society. As councillors, we took that mission into Brent, determined to stand up for the people who placed their trust in us.
Between us we have over 80 years membership of the Labour Party and over 30 years experience as local councillors representing our communities and advocating for residents. We have now come to the realisation that we can no longer play that role effectively while remaining within the Labour Party.
We always knew being a party of government would put the principles and values of the party to the test, but we have watched as on every issue this government goes further away from the founding Labour Party principles of democracy, social justice and equality.
We have a huge amount of respect for many of our hard working Labour colleagues and party members in Brent, but we don’t feel that the party represents the values we hold any longer.
We want to represent a party that believes in radical overhaul of our systems to tackle the cost of living crisis and rising inequality, including wholesale reform of our tax system to ensure that the richest pay their way, rather than tinkering around the edges.
We want to represent a party that recognises that there is a not just a conflict, or even a humanitarian emergency, but a genocide taking place in Gaza, one with British roots and one that we are supporting through arms sales and criminalising peaceful protest.
We want to represent a party that recognises that people and planet are inextricably linked and that we need to do much more to tackle the biodiversity and climate crises. That this is not something that will only affect our children, but is a case of national security here and now.
We want to be members of a party that has a real and open conversation about national identity & community cohesion and that doesn’t scapegoat immigrants, a party that maintains its international obligations to asylum seekers and stands firm against racism.
We want to be members of a party nationally and locally that values diversity of opinion rather than a top-down structure with no space for difference, that silences and expels members who speak out against the party line. We want to shape politics differently in Brent.
We did not enter public life to serve a party machine - we entered it to serve our residents and we will not abandon that duty. That is why we are today resigning our membership of the Labour Party, and joining the Green Party, becoming the first Green Group of Councillors in Brent.
We are proud to be part of the Green Party’s vision of hope and to be providing Brent residents with a real alternative to the status quo. Because there is an alternative. An alternative to austerity. An alternative to a politics that tells you “there’s not enough money” whilst billions keep flowing into the pockets of the wealthy and we continue to chase economic growth at all costs.
Today marks a new chapter in local politics in Brent, rooted in accountability and a commitment to environmental and social justice.
We invite all who share this vision to work with us in offering Brent a real alternative. Together, we can build a Brent that puts people before profit, public good before private greed and hope before fear.

When will we find out who’s standing next year for the various parties
Now have the courage to resign and put these newly-found convictions to the test in by-elections.
are these five counsellors angry labour party or labour administration brent or both?
Well done to Brent Greens, after all the years, banging a drum, 🥁 they’ve a real opportunity here to shift the scene in the borough.
My only reservation is that we’ve seen Labour councillors do absolutely nothing year on year. Perhaps that was due to the ‘strong leader’ and cabinet model. But i hope they return this faith the green membership has shown in them, and take the opportunity to stand up and show what they can do up to the elections. Show themselves to be more than the losers who weren’t selected and present themselves as some movers and shakers. One things for sure, they won’t be short of ideas of what to do differently as Greens are clear on that. Further, there is no better resource for them than the green stalwart and editor of this blog Martin Francis. Happy sailing.

Come on Cllr Jumbo, it’s your time to shine now too.
Good on them! I really really hope Brent Labour loses seats and votes at the next local elections.. Congratulations to these new Green Councillors for taking a principled stand!
Weren't these 5 all deselcted by Labour as candidates for the May 2026 local elections?
As Labour Councillors did they ever stand up to the Labour Council Leader?
As Labour Councillors did they vote against things like huge planning applications badly impacting the residents they claim to have represented?
Will the defect back to Labour if they get elected?
All except mary were deselected as councillors by labour, just bitter wanting to stay as councillors, should have worked harder when they were.
Mary mitchell wasnt deselected, only one thats there on principle.
If he does itll be the first time in 4 years
Thanks Scott. One of the key points we made during the defector interviews was the level of case work expected by the Green Party and the centrality of accountability to the ward constituents as well as the local party.
Won't stop them defecting back to Labour especially if promised a higher paid cabinet role.
Starmer first
Its a big step to join another party, and that doesn’t necessarily mean ‘bitterness’. It could be out of passion and desire to do politics differently, and really serve their local communities. Zack Polanski warned Labour, Greens want to tale over. The rest are on notice.
"We did not enter public life to serve a party machine"???
Well they apparently did so happily for a "combined 30 years" until deselection as LABOUR candidates persuaded most of them to jump ship - hanging on long enough after deselection so that any by elections were not possible under the 6 months rule and to continue to collect their special responsibility allowances by two of them be keeping their Labour Group positions.
Please do not take Brent people for fools. This is all about self preservation and very little about principled decision to better serve the public.
The only good thing is the sight of disintegration of the Labour Group in Brent who are unfit to govern and should finally be kicked out of office.
Will Brent Labour be brave enough to explain why they thought everyone here was good enough to stand, be elected and represent both Labour and a large number of Brent Constituents but NOW they are deselected as they are not fit and proper? This reeks of top down anti-democratic authoritarian control from the Labour Party central office.. special congratulations to Mary Mitchell for changing party..
This excites me. I left Labour myself a few months ago, and I'm enjoying being outside of a party for now... but this is clearly something to keep an eye on for me.
Open the door and windows, that’s the winds of change coming through Brent.
Labour might find it a bit chilly, but once they’re all send back to their homes, they can keep warm. Maybe there is a place in the house of lords waiting for them.
I've read the comments people have made about these candidates having been deselected (bar Mary) and thus 'bitter' BUT have you considered that they may not have been selected by the party because they challenged the Leadership and weren't prepared to be puppets.
6 months before an election there will be no by-election. They will put their convictions to the test in just five months.
Mo Butt is an amoral tyrant who has removed every shred of democracy on the council and replaced it with top-town grace and favour. Every single Labour Councillor knows that the Council leadership is rotten and has only maintained power through manipulating constitutions and removing voting rights.
Only question is what do the other Labour Councillor’s stand for and when will they also have a reckoning with their own conscience?
This is great news. These are all hard working, principled people, exactly the kind of people we want representing Brent residents and working towards a fairer, more equitable society. Good for them! I have always voted Labour for over 50 years but the Greens offer a real alternative now in Brent (and perhaps nationally, let's see)
Labour councillors stand for the Brent conservation areas of freehold family houses. But the conservation areas created in Brent are too few compared to other boroughs, where even Hammersmith and Fulham has 57% of these amplified welfare state strong protected resilience zones.
UK politics are brutal inequalities focused, the conservation areas always front of the public funds queue, except for population growth which they are strong protected from. Growth zones follow a tower housing the only infrastructure theme. Globalists build towers, government will grant the visas to fill and re-fill them, no home ownership in these new extractive farms/ feudal tower estates.
In two successive local elections the Labour Party in Brent gained over 90% & 80% of Council seats on roughly 50% of the votes. This is the result of the bizarre UK voting system which is neither democratic or fair.
While Labour membership & support is collapsing the current voting system may still save them as the opposition votes get split.
Since then many Labour Councillors were either suspended, deselected or have defected. Labour in Brent are divided and in big trouble.
The Brent Labour Dictatorship would of course come to an end if we had a Fair voting system.
Until this happens the best way to kick Labour out is to vote tactically. So to give a simple example.
In 2022 Alperton elected 2 Liberal Democrat Councillors and 1 Labour. Sudbury was also split 1 Liberal Democrat and 1 Labour. It is not difficult to see that in both these two wards the simplest way of eliminating 2 Labour Councillors is to vote Liberal Democrat. The evidence of elections over the last 20 years makes it clear that ONLY the Lib Dems can beat Labour in Alperton and Sudbury - and many other places.
Following the various defections and suspensions Labour are down to 42 Councillors. Control of the Council requires 29 so after taking out the 2 in Alperton and Sudbury only requires 11 more across rest of Brent.
It is not so long ago that Liberal Democrats had Councillors in Brondesbury, Kilburn, Mapesbury, Queen's Park, Willesden Green, Wembley Central, Tokyngton etc so voting tactically in those areas can get the job done.
Want to get rid of Comrade Butt & co? Now you know the best way of getting it done!
One great haircut.
Any other Brent green councillors than these? A green came second to Georgia Gould Maida Vale and Queens Park last GE.
both
The Greens allow Councillors to represent their residents first and foremost, and above the Party Leadership
Are you related to Mr Butt?
Another relation of Mr Butt
Because Towerblock Tatler doesn't like them, it is so very obvious
The remaining councillors obviously remain as the are either family or are gaining from their support of the Leader and Towerblock Tatler
It has got t happen
It looks like either Greens or Libdems could win easily in Queens Park, one of these parties should stand down their candidates, even if they are just paper candidates, otherwise the unfair process will win again and let Labour Party Right Wing Dictators back in.
Are you saying Lib Dems will stand down for Greens
No just thinking the obvious
There are now more Greens than LDs in the council, so the above comment would make sense to do!
“It is not so long ago that Liberal Democrats had Councillors in Brondesbury, Kilburn, Mapesbury, Queen's Park, Willesden Green, Wembley Central, Tokyngton etc so voting tactically in those areas can get the job done”
- it is long ago. And the experience of the Lib Dems Cllrs, “not working hard for you”, moving house or going completely AWOL is remembered by those that do..
Not convinced “tactical voting” will be needed in this election given the national picture. The votes will be going reform or green, come what may.
There was a local by-election in Queen's Park on the same day as the General Election and it was the Lib Dems who came second in the ward. Lib Dems also won and had Councillors in Queen's Park on and off since the 1980s starting with Mark Cummins so probably in a much better position to win there in 2026. It is unlikely that any of the new defectors will stand in Queen's Park and if they are to hold to their seats in Welsh Harp, Brondesbury etc they might want a free ride in these wards to have a chance of hanging on and beating Labour who will no doubt be out for revenge.
NO they never stood up against the Labour Leadership - One was in Cabinet and another the Labour Whip both taking extra cash in allowances until now. It was their deselection that prompted them to jump ship followed by the usual statement "I have not changed my principles it is the Labour Party that has changed and betrayed its socialist values". It is the standard comment by all defectors from Labour.
I don't know all of the councillors here, but do know Harbi Farah. I have much respect for him as he and the other two then councillors for Welsh Harp went over and beyond to help an elderly neighbour who had both a hoarding and dementia problem. They also were of amazing help with helping me co-ordinate with Veolia and the neighbourhood improvement officers when I wanted to do a cleanups on my street and in Neasden Recreation ground. The wellbeing of neighbours and a clean environment are what residents care about.
Brent Labour has for quite some time being beholden to developers and the ambitions of one especially vile CLP member who having failed to be elected MP after running a smear campaign against Faiza Shaheen has now inexplicably being given a life peerage, despite being neither "Right" nor "Honorable".
I look forward to the day when those within Labour who have aided and abetted a genocide in Palestine and retaliated against those who spoke up against it are hauled to the Hague to answer to the ICC
I plan to stand for Reform as I believe reform will be the only party able to save Brent
fun thing to do is to guess who the anonymous posters are
Oh dear me. Misguided.
Times have changed. Reform and Greens most popular, Lib Dems and Labour least Popular
Full slate planned?
"radical overhaul of our systems" sounds like revolutionaries than cuddly environmentalists, ie extremist far left.
Perhaps after honeymoon period and disallusion sets in, there will be independents or Lib Dems door will get a lot of knocking.
Well, lets see, you are a Council Officer aren't you :-)
People who live adjacent to Queens Park park have perhaps been over represented.
Alternative from Chamberlayne Road or other parts might be attractive to voters.
The failed MP referred to is certainly Right. Queens Park, over-represented for decades.
Vote Reform and raise the inequalities life rafts of Brent even higher. If Reform was national elected it would be hybrid war with the giant EU. There is good reason why its Neasden Goods Yard Brutal from here on in for Brent young families and newly arrived- The Poor Start programme.
Francis of Daniel lettings?
Reforms polling popularity is apparently built by its bot army. Brexit 2.
How can we hear about the brent green group? Is there a facebook, linked in or reddit or website
Best go to: https://www.facebook.com/BrentGreens/

If Cllr Tony Ethapemi is now truly 'green' perhaps he will arrange for the litter on the slip roads off the North Circular in Stonebridge to be cleaned up - it was absolutely appalling to see all of this today.
Months worth of litter has accumulated - Stonebridge Councillors and TFL should be ashamed!!!
How do we and why should we trust Labour Councillors and Labour candidates who've defected to other political parties??? Surely they are just trying to keep their current councillor job or get a councillor job?
Once elected they could easily swap back to Labour particularly if offered a lucrative cabinet role to swap back.
