Councillor Muhammed Butt, Leader of Brent Council, said:
Today, Brent has been shaken by an appalling and deeply tragic incident at the Civic Centre, in which a person has lost their life.
Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, their family and loved ones, as well as the staff, residents and visitors who witnessed what happened.
The Civic Centre has been evacuated and will remain closed until further notice. I would urge people to avoid the area and allow the police and emergency services to carry out their work.
There is an active police investigation underway - please do not speculate or repeat any unverified claims online. We are working closely with the Metropolitan Police and will provide further updates as soon as we are able.
I want to express my sincere thanks to the police, paramedics and emergency services for their swift response, and to our staff for the professionalism, compassion and calm they have shown today in the most difficult of circumstances.

Just so awful. My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the person who tragically lost their life, and with everyone affected by what happened. A deeply shocking and sad day for Brent.
Incredibly sad news, and so wrong, What kind of world are we living in that people so young are loosing their lives, one that has gone forever and another who will loose life incarceration, Nothing will change what has happened and the tragedy that has taken place. We should bring back the youth clubs and positive role models that occupied the youngsters of time gone by. We should not allow this to continue and be bystanders only. Something has to change...... these are children, we have a responsibility in this world to create a better environment where weapons in particular knives are no longer the norm............prayers and strength to all the families that have had to experience this awfulness. Also to the rest of the people that are struggling having either witnessed or read about this .......... there must be some hope out there.
Crocodile tears as he has lead to the destruction of children’s services in brent particularly for hard to reach children that were served by places like stonebridge adventure playground. RIP to someone’s child and my thoughts to the parent about to lose their 15 year old
Long gone are the days when Brent was celebrated for having the best youth services thru the 1970s and 80s and look where they ended up decimated not one youth club of any merit left and then you wonder why the young people have turned feral.
So sad for the family and friends of both the victim and the alleged attacker. Also an horrific experience for the staff and visitors to the Civic Centre and Wembley Library who witnessed the attack and the struggles to save the teenager which followed it.
But I agree with the comments about the lack of youth facilities in Brent. What happened to the great youth club that Cllr. Butt was championing at a Cabinet meeting four or five years ago, that was meant to be built on the York House carpark site in Wembley (after the ridiculous proposal to build a primary school there was dropped)?
And what about the youth club as part of the 1 Morland Gardens redevelopment, which the Cabinet approved in principle more than a year ago, but for which no further plans have yet to come forward?
