The impact of Wembey Stadium on the local community has always been controversial. On the one hand complainants are told, 'There has been a stadium here for more than a hundred years. Why live near a stadium if you are going to complain about it?' to, 'We are imprisoned in our homes on Event Days and the number keeps increasing.' Views vary from, 'The stadium brings in money for the local economy and puts Wembley on the map', to 'We have to pay for clearing up all the litter, put up with public urination and disruption of public transport.'
So the news that Wembley Stadium is seeking to apply to Brent Planning Committe to increase the cap on the number of non-sporting events from 46 to 54 is likely to reignite debate.
In a circular to residents Wembley Stadium says:
Wembley Stadium is looking to adjust the annual stadium event cap to provide more flexibility to attract additional non-sporting major events.
The current permission of 46 events per year limits the number of dates Wembley Stadium can offer to non-sports acts or events. Increasing the cap to 54 major events per year would provide increased flexibility to attract major international acts to the stadium.
The application will retain a cap on the number of major sporting events to no more than 25 per annum, with a minor variation to the definition of a major event as a stadium bowl event with a capacity in excess of 60,000 people.
A planning application will be submitted to Brent Council shortly. Full details of the application will be available for viewing on Brent’s planning portal in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile Brent Council's 'Healthy Streets and Parking Resident Services' is asking for the views of councillors (not the public) on Event Day Traffic Management Orders
In order to accommodate events and games being held at the stadium, it is proposed to add dates for the 2024 calendar year to the existing Wembley Stadium Event Day Traffic Management Orders which have been made and are currently enforced.
We need to prepare for the eventuality for all of these dates to be included within our Traffic Management Orders even though on some dates no event will take place. This is mainly due to the fact that the dates cannot precisely be identified with certainty yet, at the time of this proposal.
Please note that on the date that enforcement will take place, signs will display the restrictions that are in place.
The proposed events are planned on the following dates, inclusive of the South Way two-way traffic flow:-
25th February 2024,
23rd and 26th March 2024,
7th, 20th and 21st April 2024,
4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th, 19th, 25th and 26th May 2024,
1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 15th, 16th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 29th June 2024,

Eventually they will have no limits and major event will be adjusted to 120,000. They think we are fools, and they know that the Planning Committee members will vote for this.

Wouldn't be against this IF some things actually change ...
- Brent Council need to reduce the hours of event day parking restrictions - the
current hours of operation are incredibly excessive impacting on so many local residents trying to manage their busy lives - loads of us have lived here for years, since the 1960s and 1970s, and Wembley Stadium is encroaching on our freedoms more and more each year - caring for vulnerable dependents, getting kids to and from school, managing visits from family, workmen, deliveries etc can be very stressful!
- ALL the local buses should be kept running on their normal routes on event days - public transport should always take priority over event day traffic especially for commuters trying to get home from work - the new Wembley Stadium was built as a public transport destination yet residents are now incredibly severely impacted on event days;
- the main entrance to Wembley Central Station should not be closed after events - why should us residents trying to get into the station have to trail down London Road usually in the dark with a load of drunken rowdy football fans or concert goers? Residents should be able to enter their local station as normal!
- Wembley Stadium and the event promoters should pay for the full clean up after the events - why should our hard earned council tax payments go towards this just because we live near the showpiece national stadium??? They are making the money we are not.
- Wembley residents should be offered discounts on tickets for Wembley Stadium events with priority booking too - tickets are so expensive and as we are increasingly impacted on event days we should surely get some benefit!
- there should be more investment in public toilets - residents are fed up with seeing stadium visitors urinating in public! It's offensive and unhygienic. What impression are we giving our visitors to Wembley?
Those of us who have lived in the shadow of Wembley Stadium for more than 30+ years have no issues with the number of Events the Stadium holds. What we do have an issue with is, is the additional costs for Policing, Clean up, etc should not be paid for by us Residents via our Council Tax. The owners, the FA, generate a huge amount of income and profit from these Events, and allthe additional costs for staging them should be met by them. Brent Council need to stop pussy footing around and charge them accordingly in order to balance the books.
Our family has lived in Wembley since 1958 so we fully agree that the increasing number of events at the stadium is now seriously impacting our family life so support your comments above.
We cannot dictate to a Private Company what they can and cannot do with their business, but what we can ask for is to show local residents some respect, and minimise the effects and treat us fairly.
Brent Council has the power to stop extra events, they have to issue a licence for each event and they should fully understand the impact that these events have on us local residents.
We can dictate to private business that they can’t pollute rivers, so why not an environmental levy on the street pollution? Rationale for litter was wrongly designated ‘antisocial behaviour’ and blamed on renters, then used as rationale for the landlord levy in Wembley.
