Preston Community Library Opening: 'A proud and extraordinary achievement'

There were crowds outside Preston Community Library this morning as the community came out in droves to welcome the official opening of the library that they campaigned for, helped fund and staffed with volunteers.

Barry Gardiner MP was there, and ward councillors  were present but it was the people who were there for what Philip Bromberg,  described as a 'a proud and extraordinary achievement that took pride of place.

Reflecting early debates over strategy on library closure,  Philip said, 'Everyone here at Preston Community Library still believe that all public libraries should be properly funded with  paid and trained staff.'

It's been a very long road to now for us. We are so grateful to all our supporters, notwithstanding the role played by Wembley Matters helping us to keep the torch burning, even when it sputtered in the winds of change! Thank you Martin - a great day - a pleasure to see you today. Keep the faith! Margaret

So Labour run Brent Council closed the old public library yet our Labour MP, the Labour Deputy Mayor and the Labour Councillors attend the opening of the new volunteer led community library - once again double standards and any chance for a Labour photoshoot.

Congratulations to everyone who made this happen

Edited comment to conform with guidelines: It is disgusting that Brent Labour are attempting to make political capital out of the work of so very many Brent Residents that have fought for our Libraries, even though Brent labour wanted to kill them off. Brent Labour should be ashamed of themselves, and as for this [ ]Deputy Mayor of Brent, with no knowledge of the SOS fight, opening the New Library, what a kick in the teeth for the campaigners that is. We should expect all the Labour Councillors to attend in an attempt to steal from the Brent SOS campaigners.

Make Libraries Great Again. Queens Park Library has had a £1 million upgrade, due to re-open 2nd Feb 26. So maybe Brent has listened selectively, at least in terms of de-growth conservation areas investment in learning. As said before Brent needs way more conservation areas and way less tenanted permanent developments zoned

The libraries closed over 10 years ago. Evidently the MP, Mayor, other councillors did not just arrive uninvited.

De-growth Brent seems to be the only way to get actual welfare state infrastructure upgrades and investment in these right-thinking, reform policy times.

Why get politicians to open it? Why not a local author?
