Standing ovation for inaugural speech by Brent's youngest ever Mayor: 'This is modern Brent'

Cllr Ryan Hack is Brent's youngest ever Mayor and at yesterday's Mayoral Ceremony made the best speech I have heard in Brent for many a long year.

“This is modern brent”, says man in Victorian garb

Less impressive was to see so many Labour Councillors not able to string a few words of Thanks to the outgoing Mayor without having them written down. Hopeless!

I believe that Councillor Hack concerns about poverty and the struggle that some people are going through at present are genuine. He is of course still a member of the Labour Party which nationally took £300 from most pensioners needed to heat their homes during the last winter and the Brent Labour Party locally which has taken away Council Tax Support worth up to £600 from thousands of Brent residents. All of this is forcing even more local people to seek handouts at food banks. It would be much better and give these people some dignity of those Labour cuts were reversed so those thousands of Brent people impacted by the LABOUR CUTS so they had the freedom to make their own choices to but what they need rather than having to put up with the indignity of depending on food banks.

Some good working class roots there to the local area. Unclear why he is with the party of capital that works against the interests of the working class. The party that can’t even say working class but ‘people’.

At 5minutes he talks about “the founding of our borough - when Willesden and Wembley joined 60 years ago”.

Anyone else for a divorce?

If we are such a diverse and inclusive borough why do we have so many separate cultural organisations and separate faith schools???
Our communities should all be joining together not working separately.

Agree!

Don't forget that lots of local businesses are also impacted by the national insurance changes meaning they will employ fewer people - this will also impact greatly on younger people trying to get into work.

It was a forced marriage, as part of a major local government reorganization that included the abolition of Middlesex as a county and the creation of the GLC.

Many in the mainly Conservative Wembley did not want to merge with the mainly Labour Willesden. There had been talk of a possible merger with Harrow instead - Wembley had been split off from Harrow, as a separate Urban District Council, as part of a previous local government reorganization in 1894.

But the marriage went ahead from April 1965, and the new London Borough was given the name of Brent, after the river which had previously divided Wembley from Willesden. They chose "Forward Together" as Brent's motto, and together as a wonderfully diverse community is how I hope we will remain
.

What a compassionate, caring and humble man. He's incredible.

Labour are in favour of "forced marriages" because they have this daft idea that bigger is better - hence their drive for 'mega' Councils. So to answer your question NO CHANCE of a divorce.

It's history and tradition of course that justify the differences. That is why in the 21st century we are still forced to put up with men and women dressing up in red robes and fancy chains so they can pretend that they are special - when this circus is nothing more than just perpetuation of political patronage. AND the joke of course is that if the Mayor was a Tory the robes would have to be in blue!

Cork in Mallow? Thirty third county of Ireland? I hope the rest of his speech is more accurate. .
