Cheap Labour? Low pay for Labour leaflet delivery alleged

Brent Liberal Democrat leader, Cllr Paul Lorber, has written to Cllr Butt, leader of Brent Labour Council, to draw his attention to the low pay of a worker delivering leaflets for the Labour Party in Northwick Park ward.

Lorber wrote:

I live in Northwick Park and this Labour Leaflet was being delivered to my home by paid for delivery. The individual delivering seemed a foreign national.

When questioned he said that he was paid £10 an hour to deliver the leaflets.

£10 per hour is of course less than the legal minimum wage and much less than the Living Wage that Brent Council under your leadership prides itself encouraging employers to pay.

I think you will agree that individuals should not be exploited and that you and the Brent Labour Party will investigate and ensure that your contractor responsible for these deliveries pays their workers at least the minimum wage for their labours.

You may wish to suspend current and future paid for deliveries like this until you ascertain facts and receive confirmation that the people delivering leaflets for you and other Labour candidates are paid at least the correct and legal minimum wage or preferably the London Living wage.

As both a Labour MP and Labour GLA member are featured in the leaflet they too might be concerned at being implicated in any form of exploitation that may be going on.

I will be pleased to hear the outcome of your investigation and the action you will take.
A second source says that the delivery person was in his mid-20s.

I understand that in the absence of a reply from Muhammed Butt, Paul Lorber has now written to Labour leader Keir Starmer about the issue.

This is alleged and hasn’t been proven. Partisan from Lorber?

I think paul since he lost the role of opposition leader, is more upset by the fact the guy delivering earns more than he does an hour.

That is why I wrote to the Labour Leader and gave him a chance to investigate. I copied to all Labour Councillors. Still waiting for a reply or even a confirmation that they will investiogate.

What a stupid comment. Some of us do our community work without worrying about the money. After deducting the tax and paying my Councillor expenses I give the rest to charity. The issue here is that Labour candidates cannot even deliver their own leaflets and if they are going to use paid for delivery they should ensure that those people doing the work are paid at least the legal minimum.

'Here to help in Northwick Park ' - should say 'Here to sell off Northwick Park open space '! That is the true face of Brent Labour.

Probably because he wouldn't be seen dead with some of this load of Brent Labour free loaders and opportunists. Besides, Brent Labour are getting a real kicking across the borough from all accounts. It's a real shame the Tories are in such massive disarray and therefore giving unforeseen opportunities to the other parties. So, writing out Labour and the Tories, who gains? We will see

Isn't the Labour Councillor in Northwick Park a multi millionaire with a very large property empire? It is understood that his wife is standing in Kingsbury, obviously a Towerblock Tatler placement, as there's no other way she'd get selected, especially by the Labour Pary of old. How things have changed. Milk the poor via rents and then underpay them. Align with Brent Labour for power and influence, and LOTS of PROFIT?

Loads of Labour Councillors in Brent are landlords.

Also due to a loophole in the minimum wage laws overtime isn't governed by it, so say mr leaflet deliverer works 7 days a week to bring his wages up, then his final wage packet for the month can actually bring his £10 up to the minimum wage overall, lot of sweatshops in tottenham used this loophole to keep paying the same rate as before by lowering the overtime rate, people got minimum wage for 40 hrs but still remained on the same low wage overall to stay at previous rates of earnings, so if asked their overall wage was below but within the law.
