Join the call for Starmer to put Proportional Representation in the Labour Manifesto

 

The only way we are going to get real change is the introduction of Proportional Representation so that voting really matters to everyone. This powerful consortium led by Make Votes Matters has launched a a petition aimed at stopping Starmer's dithering.

They say:

The British public has been demanding Proportional Representation for years.

Support from voters is the highest it has ever been, including having doubled among Labour voters.

Thousands campaign for it every year. From First Ministers Mark Drakeford and Nicola Sturgeon, mayors Andy Burnham and Sadiq Khan, to grassroots activists up and down the country.

Every major party in Great Britain other than Labour and the Conservatives promised it at the last election.

Now, Labour is a big step closer to joining us.

Labour Conference has now passed a motion calling for Proportional Representation. This is an historic moment.

But you said this is "not a priority".

Without your support there is no guarantee that Labour will introduce Proportional Representation after the next election.

But we are not going away. We will not allow Proportional Representation to be kicked into the long grass.

We want you to take up the torch of electoral reform.

We want a manifesto commitment for Proportional Representation.

However we vote, all of us want to cast our next vote for a party that commits to PR in its manifesto.

Ask London Mayoral candidates to pledge support for voting reform

It is a fortnight since we launched the Stand Up for Democracy campaign. Thousands of emails have been sent asking the next Mayor of London to fix our city’s broken democracy. Will you join them?

Together we set out to find out where they stand on on voting reform, and on empowering the London Assembly. Both Labour’s Sadiq Khan and the Green Party’s Siȃn Berry have come out in support of the campaign.

We need your help. We want to get all the candidates to tell us what they will do to bring about voting reform both locally and nationally. We want to know that they are prepared to give the London Assembly the teeth it desperately needs to keep the Mayor accountable.

We’ve got two of the main parties to pledge stand up for democracy, now let’s get the rest of the 10 candidates for London Mayor to do the same. Help us put the pressure on the candidates. The more of us asking, the harder it is for them to ignore.

How much autonomy should local councils have?

The Political and Constitutional Reform Committee is currently exploring the possibility of putting the relationship between central and local government into writing. They’ve written a draft code for this, which covers a range of issues about the powers a local government should have.

They’re keen to find out what the public thinks about local government and what powers central government should have over local councils, and they’ve launched a public consultation. Unlock Democracy will be submitting evidence evidence to the consultation, and we’d like to best represent your views in what we say.

We’ve launched a web survey to gather your views on the relationship between local and central government. Do you have two minutes to participate?

It’s a simple yes/no questionnaire which will help us understand what our supporters think about powers that local and central government should have, and the level of autonomy for local councils. Your answers will form the basis of our submission to the Committee.
