Major parties to attend Brent local elections Climate and Nature Hustings 14th April 7-9pm

From Brent ACE

Representatives of most major parties will be attending a Climate and Nature Hustings organised by ACE Brent, the new coalition of environment and residents groups who campaign for a stronger council response to the climate emergency. So far the Labour Party, Green Party, Conservative Party and Liberal Democrat Party have all agreed to speak and answer residents' questions about their climate and nature plans for Brent after the elections.

The hustings will be at Barham Community Library, 660 Harrow Road, HA0 2HB on Tuesday 14th April, 7-9pm.

It will be chaired by barrister, broadcaster and local author Hashi Mohamed. It will also be online.

ACE Brent, Action on the Climate and Ecological Emergency, Brent, is a coalition of 15 environment, climate and residents groups. This includes Brent Friends of the Earth, Brent Cycling Campaign, Brent XR and Brent Parks Forum (see below for full list).

Elaine Sheppard, representing ACE Brent, says:

There is a five year window to halve emissions and prevent climate disaster. Brent council is taking climate action and has taken some steps to increase dialogue on the climate emergency. But Brent needs to do more, speak up more, and work with all of us to respond to changes already happening. Brent is benchmarked at 25 out of 33 London councils for actions taken towards net zero according to Climate Emergency UK, and 21 for Healthy Streets, according to London Boroughs Healthy Streets Scorecard. It is time to hear how parties plan to increase these scores.

All residents are encouraged to attend the hustings - to ask questions and hear about the plans of the different parties. Attendance is open to all. Please register because places are limited.

Climate change denial in the Brent Population Growth Zones. There's a hot topic to avoid.

How fitting that this meeting is being held in Barham Park which was gifted to the residents of Wembley for recreation by Titus Barham in 1937 because he was concerned about the overdevelopment of Wembley then.

The park is considered a Site of Special Scientific Interest - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/protected-areas-sites-of-special-scientific-interest because of tge wildlife habitat there.

But sadly our Labour run Brent Council show little regard for this vitally important green space - they sold off the two ex park keepers houses, which could instead have been turned into a local community hub, and then allowed the removal of the restrictive covenant to allow the development of the site where the 2 houses stand despite the potential impacts on vital local wildlife.

Brent generic, is so off the pace on green transition/ climate change resilience, not even in the funds queue. The NO-to-population growth boroughs hog it and all mechanisms are in place to continue this brutal inequalities growth....

A need to political re-think NO-to-neighbourhood car-free housing towers only zones. Is this No-to-resilience building, No-to-community meanwhile colonial land approach protecting families and assisted their healthy living?

MIND THE LONDON INEQUALITIES GAP

5 Brent Labour Councillors sit on the Barham Park Trust Committee:
1. Chair is Brent Council Leader Cllr Mo Butt
2. Vice Chair is Deputy Brent Council Leader Mili Patel
3. Councillor Fleur Donnelly-Jackson
4. Councillor Jake Rubin
5. Councillor Krupa Sheth

Rather than protecting this vital green space that is held in trust for us residents they instead agreed to the removal of the restrictive covenant to allow a wealthy developer to build on the site of the 2 ex park keepers cottages disturbing local wildlife in a quieter part of the park that regularly floods.

No residents are allowed to sit on this trust even though the park was left to us for recreation.

As the Barham buildings have been mentioned above, why have they been removed from the Special Interest Nature Conservation area when the buildings are obviously home to many species including protected bats?
