Comment received by email: Hi Martin, the council admit they are taking a risk by setting a fixed rate of £15.04 per hour for carers, as most London boroughs pay a higher rate. The council seem to be assuming that current carers will stay loyal to their clients rather than earn a lot more elsewhere. If I was a carer I would be moving to where I could earn more, as loyalty does not pay the bills.
Also the council are re-negotiating contracts to day care providers, in order to get them to reduce their funding.
The council say they have too many day care providers and this will force many of them out of 'the market' but it expects some will have to stay, as they only have one source of funding and that is from the council.
