Given the circumstances of Anton Georgiou’s resignation from Brent Council, Brent Green Party has released the following statement:
"Democracy free of violent threats is more important than any individual party interest. We will not stand in the Alperton ward by-election brought about by Cllr Georgiou's resignation and urge the Labour and Conservative parties to take similar action."

The Greens are doing the right thing by stepping back and putting safety above politics. It’s a strong stand for protecting democracy, and Labour and the Conservatives should follow their lead. No one should face threats for being involved in public service.
Remember, the individual threatened to KILL Cllr Georgiou.
Labour for sure would not have the decency to stand down 😞
Let's hope Alperton residents are sensible and vote against Labour in the by-election.
Greens stood down in Batley & Spen after Jo Cox was killed. It was the likes of BNP who stood. I would like to know if the Greens have asked Cllr Butt for comment.
Brent Green Party sent the statement, including the suggestion that Labour and Conservatives also stand down, to the leders of all 3 parties before the press announcement, as a matter of courtesy. I understand that only the Lib Dems have responded so far.
Isn’t a bit anti-democratic for the parties to just let the Lib Dems have the seat just because of one councillor’s personal issues?
Yes a lib dem should never have been elected in the first place, this is a Labour borough and we need Labour councillors working for Alperton.
This is a by-election, so stepping aside to allow a LibDem replacement for Anton Georgiou on Brent Council until the next full Council elections in May 2026 would not be anti-democratic in the circumstances of his resignation.
I am sure that Labour will manage to hold onto power, with 49 out of 57 seats!

says "this is a Labour borough and we need Labour councillors working for Alperton." BUT Labour councillors don't work for residents anywhere else in the borough - they don't even respond when contacted by residents asking fir help!
Yes, as Anonymous14 January 2025 at 08:23 says, Brent is a Labour Controlled Borough. However, the attitude of our Labour Council Leadership and Councillors generally do not show any Socialist Values, nor do they appear to care about the current residents of the Borough. The majority of the Brent Councillors present themselves as super important and rule us as if only they know what is best for the residents of Brent and they obviously don't actually listen to the residents.
Anyone else giggling at the Labour candidate's 'pledge' to "fight for more Brent Council Enforcement Officers" and "campaign for more affordable housing"??
Maybe someone should remind her that Labour have been in power in Brent for 15 years and Shama Quintain Tatler is anti-affordable housing.
It is usual Labour arrogance by Anonymous 14 Jan 08.23. Residents of Alperton elected Anton Georgiou in the 2020 by election and he topped the poll again in 2022 for the simple reason that he worked hard for local people and challenged Brent Council on issues such as the never ending imposition of never ending Tower blocks in Alperton without any regard of their impact on the long standing Alperton residents. In contrast you only see Labour when there is an election on. Everyone knows that only the Lib Dems can beat Labour in Alperton. The Tories have no chance and Labour are scared of tactical voting - but that is what is needed in Brent to kick M Butt and his cronies out of office. The Greens have made a stand on this already - and others should too.
WOW "A liberal councillor should never have been elected in the firdt place" so you dont believe in a democratic vote. Or is it you couldnt manipulate the votes
You clearly gave no empathy or no understanding regarding what Cllr Georgiou has experienced.
On behalf of the Liberal Democrat Group of Councillors I would like to say THANK YOU to the Brent Green Party for the principled stand they have taken. We hope that no other Councillor in Brent will ever have to experience the type of threats and harassment that Anton Georgiou and his family had to endure for 2 years. It is not nice to be constantly threatened with violence and even worse when those threats are directed at your 80 year old grandmother. The Liberal Democrats and Brent lost a dedicated local campaigner. We did not expect Labour to accept the Green Party challenge. The election in Alperton will take place in February and the Liberal Democrats will campaign to win it.
