Colourful cavalcade of determined anti-fascists commemorate Cable Street's 80th anniversary
The post-Brexit rise in xenophobia amongst politicians, in the mass media and on the street. brought out a great crowd of Londoners today in all their diversity to commemorate the Cable Street anniversary. 80 years ago Oswald Mosley's fascists were prevented from marching through East London's streets by another diverse group of Londoners. the demography may have changed but the determination remains the same.

'Global visionary' Narendra Modi likely to face demonstrations at Wembley Stadium extravaganza in November
When Brent North MP, Barry Gardiner, invited Narendra Modi of the BJP to the House of Commons in 2013 there were chaotic scenes LINK outside the Brent Civic Centre where Gardiner was holding his surgery. Gardiner was Chair of Labour Friends of India at the time. The visit did not take place.
Members of the South Asia Solidarity Group were protesting over allegations that Modi was implicated in the Gujerat riots of 2002.
Now Prime Minister Modi is due to visit not the House of Commons but Wembley Stadium. Asian Lite Com reports:
The Europe India Forum (EIF) said it will be hosting a reception in honour of Prime Minister Modi at Wembley Stadium on 13 November.The BBC is currently running an 'India Season' with the Indian economy expected to overtake that of China in the near future. UK-India relations are at the top of the political agenda.
Over 70,000 people are expected to attend this special invitation only “Olympic style” event. It will be the largest reception any foreign head of government has ever received in the UK.

In the run up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the UK, four of the UK’s foremost Dalit organisations have written to Narendra Modi, expressing their dismay about the recent revelations by investigative news portal Cobrapost. Their letter notes that senior BJP politicians were involved in the massacres of some 144 Dalit men, women and children in Bihar and that Mr Modi has so far neither spoken out against the self-confessed killers and their accomplices nor taken any action against them.
Asked if there would be demonstrations against Modi's visit to the UK Amrit Wilson of South Asia Solidarity said:Spokespersons from the organisations urge Mr Modi to act because his ‘ lack of action on this issue gives the shocking message that Dalit and oppressed caste lives do not matter in India’ . They urge him to act urgently to ensure that the self-confessed killers are brought to justice and that all the politicians, including senior BJP politicians, are dismissed from their posts, arrested and charged.
We have not forgotten the Gujarat genocide, the Dalit massacres or the attacks on women. Every week, there are new cases of rape and murder with Modi's party and its associated Hindu supremacist organisations clearly implicated. But Modi is silent. He is coming to the UK to arrange the sale of even more of India's resources to British corporates. So yes, we will protest and we hope British anti-fascists will join us, because this is fascism

North West London United against return of fascist group to Cricklewood
Racists and Fascists are once again targeting Brent. The South East Alliance have said they are returning to Cricklewood Broadway on July 19th after the local community mobilised against them a few weeks ago.
The group are pretending that they are protesting about a Muslim Brotherthood office above a shop despite the fact that the police said the occupants have left, and in any case they were not the Muslim Brotherhood itself.
The real reason is that the racists can't stand the fact that not only is Brent multi-cultural but that the community gets on well together most of the time and people are positive about being part of a diverse neighbourhood. They are prepared to stand up and defend their neighbours and their neighbourhood.
The SE Alliance come from outside the area in order to stir up racial and anti-Muslim prejudice. An adhoc group has been formed called North West London United to oppose them on July 19th. NW London United aims to bring all members of the community together to tell the South East Alliance that they are not wanted here.
North West London United has prepared a statement that they ask people and I have been happy to do so:

of the Essex branch of the EDL, includes known
fascists and has links to Ulster loyalists. They say they are demonstrating against
the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood, but since that organisation moved
to Austria in April before the SEA came to Cricklewood on 14th June,
they clearly intend simply to bring their message of hatred to disrupt
Cricklewood’s vibrant multicultural community.
In Cricklewood, as in the whole of North West London, we are proud of our diversity. Here people live and work together, children study, play and grow up together in mutual respect, regardless of faith or skin colour, language or place of birth. We will not tolerate attempts to divide us or stir up hatred. We stood united on June 14th to show the SEA that there is no place here for their racism and Islamophobia. We ask you to join us on 19th July to do the same again.

Greens join those standing up to racism and fascism
Hundreds marched from Parliament Square and rallied in Trafalgar Square today to demonstrate against racism and fascism ahead of the local and Euro elections. Many speakers expressed concern about how, in the wake of Ukip, the three main parties were pandering to racism and xenophobia. Jean Lambert Green MEP urged everyone to vote for whatever progressive party, although she herself was a Green, to keep the extreme right from increasing their representation in the European Parliament.

Farce or Fascism? Brent approves restrictions on free distribution of literature
Needless to say Brent Executive rubber stamped the proposal on licensing leafleting on designated land this evening but were left in doubt that that their decision was based on a poorly researched and imprecise report with no detail on interpretation and every sign of having dangerous implications for free speech.
I can honestly say as a school governor that a document like that would have been thrown out by a governing body. I told the Executive it was hard to decide whether their proposal was farce or fascism, but it was likely to fall between the two.
Despite Tara Brady of he Brent and Kilburn Times circulating a copy of the actual e-mail from the Brent Council which stated 'Charities would be exempt from these new rules and political parties exempt during election times' Cllr James Powney insisted that all along they had meant all activities for political purposes would be exempt.
Cllr Powney dug himself further into a hole when he claimed the proposals were not just about the Olympics but long-term and across the borough, despite the report stating 'These controls are being sought now to assist with the effective control of literature distributors anticipated during the Olympic period in an attempt to reduce the amount of waste printed material deposited in certain areas of the borough'.
Those designated areas include streets far away from the Wembley Olympic venues such as Shoot Up Hill, Station Road Harlesden and Edgware Road.
As Sarah Cox said on behalf of Brent Fightback we should not have to rely on Cllr Powney's interpretation of phrases such a 'political purpose' but have precision and clarity in the documentation.
Small businesses and people organising cultural events, jumble sales and fund raising activities will be faced with high fees and restrictions on their activities.
There will now be a 14 day consultation but this is only about the Council's proposal to designate certain areas or roads where the licence will be required rather than the scheme as a whole.

It is no business of the council to restrict the free exercise of speech or to charge people for their exercise of it or to prevent readers from making up their own minds about whether they want to receive it or not. This is a dark day for Brent and surely one of the worst instances of this administration's evident contempt for the people.
