Cllr Tariq Dar is to be Brent Council's next Deputy Mayor

Cllr Tariq Dar was elected Deputy Mayor for 2023-24 at yesterday's Brent Labour Group Annual General Meeting. He had 29 votes, to Tony Ethapemi's 14. There was 1 abstention. This means as far as can be forseen that Cllr Dar will be Mayor in 2024-25.

Cllr Orleen Hylton will be appointed Mayor for 2023-24 at the Brent Council AGM.

Surely he was only elected as the Labour nominee for the Deputy Mayor. Anything is still possible at the AGM next week!

I think it is as likely that he will not be confirmed as Deputy Mayor as it is likely that Brent Cabinet will not approve an item on their agenda.

In reality only the Mayor is elected at the Council AGM The Deputy Mayor is simply the new Mayor's nomination and not subject to a vote at the AGM.

In my initial comment I was only 'speculating'. The Labour Group is not united and there is constant sniping behind peoples backs - there is always the possibility that the new Mayor, once in position, breaks ranks and picks someone of her choice.

Unlikely but would be entertaining if she did.

Thank you, Paul, for that information.

That is interesting - I might even watch the live stream of the Annual Meeting!

Dar was always an obvious pick for Mayor, it's obviously why he became a councillor. I wonder what he'll want to add to his collection next.
