From Harlesden People's Community Council
The trailblazing initiative saw an underserved community harness local craftsmanship and creativity to transform an old industrial building into a pioneering centre for Black excellence and self-empowerment.
This exciting event will bring together founding members of the Harlesden People's Community Council, along with experts from UCL's Bartlett School of Architecture and Sarah Parker Remond Centre, to discuss the significance of Bridge Park, its role in expanding the way we think about heritage, and the current threat of demolition by Brent Council.
You’ll also hear from celebrated actor and Bridge Park alumnus Ray Fearon, who will reflect on how the centre helped shape his career.
Event Details:
- Date: Thursday, 23rd January 2025
- Time: 6:00 – 8:00 PM
- Location: Harrie Massey Lecture Theatre, University College London, 25 Gordon Street, WC1H 0AY

Until recently HPCC/BPCC wanted to knock down Bridge Park and build their own "Black Canary Wharf" https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/22550116_1507469652.3048_funddescription.png Now they want to 'save' the crumbling buildings just to kill off the plans put forward which will provide new homes and a modern leisure centre for all
Its ugly. The council should give them a spanking new larger building, with some housing on site as the trade off
The council won't 'give' them anything - there will be fees and service charges which will keep increasing.
Surely everyone has known that the centre was almost certainly going to be demolished for several years? Why wait until now, when the Council and owners come forward with a long awaited regeneration scheme to try and get it listed?
If it is considered of such great value to Black History, the listing should have been put forward much earlier rather than being used as an opportunistic delaying tactic.
Probably because a lot of people knew nothing about the regeneration plans - Brent Council planning consultations are usually kept pretty secret.
Clearly I must care more about what is going on in my neighbourhood because I have known about the redevelopment of this site for many years.
"Probably because a lot of people knew nothing about the regeneration plans" The people now trying to get the existing dilapidated listed are the same ones who previously wanted to knock it down and develop it themselves as the 'Black Canary Wharf', they spent years on a pointless costly court case to claim it as belonging to them rather than to the whole community. This listing is nothing more than a cynical spoiler to stop/delay the planned leisure centre and new housing
It's a shame that a historical building is due to close early this year. Without the council guaranteeing that it will be a affordable complex that meets the needs of the diverse community. I would agree it could do with a revamp. And they should of built on one side and move people over. But instead they are just turning it like the wembley outlet. Where the residents can not afford what's in it and only can walk around it. And the question is will it be council owned and council run and still have the word community in it and continue to work with the community. I THINK NOT!!
Crime goes up due to the lack of youth centres and things for the community to do that is affordable for all to enjoy.
Atm Bridge park offers gym sauna steam (separate mens and womans section) which no other gyms offer and classes for £20 or £22.50 no contract. With parking and free lockers.
Why is the council trying take that away??
Brent Council built the extensions to Ealing Road Library in Wembley Central promising new community space but they then rented the space out to the Cha Sha Cafe for storage - us residents didn't even get a chance to use it! So don't trust them 😡
Don't let Council and developer promises to fund improvements to infrastructure fool you - see here...
